In August 2001, at the same time as a group of Slovak children were building the town of Pips York at Tabor Village III (see August 2001 Village Summer Camp), a group of Slovak teachers gathered to make the town of Pipsovce (which roughly means 'peep place'). Both programs took place in the ABC Centrum, a youth center which was generously made available for our use. Because, as always in our seminars for teachers, pedagogical discussions and other teaching-Village activities took up a good bit of the time, |
| Pipsovce didn't manage to construct as
much in the way of town buildings and public parks as the children did.
Trade between the two towns, however, was quite intense -- raising
a number of questions about currency exchange and economic development
strategies (see Village
Curriculum: Exchange Rates and Capitalizing on the Lessons at Hand).
The Pipsovce workshop was part of our initiative to expand Village in Eastern Slovakia. The Project Coordinator is Tatiana Vahovska and we are working in cooperation with the Centrum Metodicki - Prešov, the government's in-service teacher training center. Participants in the seminar received professional development credits; the supplies for the after-school Village programs they are running in the 2001-2002 school year are being provided by The Village Project Inc. thanks to the donations we receive from individuals. |
