Peep Gazette coverage of Town Court Creation

from the Peep Gazette

LAW STUFF
BY:  NOBODY YOU KNOW

Our court system was recently created. I made the basic bill, with numerous additions by Amy and Nathan. It passed narrowly. The fist time, It was 5-4, but Nora retracted her yes vote in a re-vote. Then there was another re-vote, with the result being 4 yes, 4 no, and 3 abstentions. Gabe (the moderator) cast the deciding yes vote. Here is the bill:

The council is the jury. The moderator is the judge. If anyone involed in the case is on the jury, then they will have to recuse themselves. If the judge is involved a  random person will be selected to temporarily take the position of judge. (This is not what I said and Ethan neglected to correct it.) The court has the power to interpret town laws. The council/court has to tell the town what they are discussing before discussion. (Ethan left out announcing the outcome after the voting) The court has the power to resolve lawsuits and disputes. A majority of the court can decide if individual proceedings are closed to the public.

Here are some interviews about the bill:

Henry said:

I think it’s generally a good design, but the secrecy part worries me.

I said:

What secrecy part?

Henry said:

The part where they can close proceedings.

My Response:

I think the part where you can close proceedings in good because sometimes they might want privacy. I also point out that it only applies to court cases, not law votes or law interpretations.

Gabe said:

I think that’s resonable. I don’t think it would be apporpriate to select 5 random people because it would take forever because some people don’t want to or are involved.

My Response:

I agree. That is my position totally.

Ethan Said:

Nothing, because when I asked he just was really annoying.

Nils said:

I got kicked out after saying “I want an amendment that frogs can vote” or something similar really loud every 10 seconds. But I liked the basic bill.

Nathan said:

I hate this bill because we have to tell the town what we are discussing! This bill doesn’t give the  council enough power.

My Response:

The goverment should serve the people. I think our while the council and moderator are not corrupt they are a little bit power-hungry. This is a balanced bill and I did not intend to have all the amendments that other people added. I just said they were friendly to get it overwith so they would vote for it. I wanted to get the basic bill to pass. I am pro-government because all my friends are in the government.

Robin said:

I’m fine with it. I abstained because I don’t really care about the court system.

My Response:

If you don’t care about the law system, that’s fine with me. However, lawsuits and crimes are building up. Take the murder of Ashlyn, the acupuncture debate, and Ethan suing Blake over his house plans.
